Feeling Big & Being Small: Opening Reception

Feeling Big & Being Small is a group show which explores differing approaches to the making of contemporary Landscape art. It encourages viewers to reflect upon how diversity in image-creation lends credit to the power of individual introspection, which both contrasts and illuminates the feelings of smallness imparted by vast interconnected landscapes.

Reading with fellow poets August Smith and Wallace Barker

BIWS Presents: Rewriting Our Stories (Boston Book Festival 2019)

Boston Immigrant Writer's Salon is proud to be part of Boston Book Festival's BBF Unbound Series to present Rewriting Our Stories: A Workshop for Immigrant and Diaspora Writers.

For both readers and writers, so much of the value of books lies in their ability to act as a mirror. Yet while immigrants find themselves in the center of so much of today’s media, the question of whether or not these stories reflect our experiences is often more complicated than it seems. In this workshop created by and for immigrant and diaspora writers, moderators Frankie Concepcion (2019 Undocupoet Fellow, Sibling Rivalry Press) and Kayti Lahsaiezadeh (Kweli Journal, FreezeRay Poetry) will guide writers in a journey of self-reflection and empowerment as we re-engage with the stories we want the world to know, as told by our own voices. Through a series of prompts, guided discussion, and brave space practices, this workshop will be centered on community, craft, and celebrating our identities.

WORKSHOP DETAILS: THE ART OF CARIBBEAN POETS
This workshop will focus on the work of selected Caribbean poets writing today. We’ll examine how these writers have addressed colonial legacies and revised imperialist texts, engaged in creolization, examined notions of diaspora and the Americas, and articulated national and Caribbean spaces and subjectivities. Their poems will serve as models for the writing we might engage in ourselves.

WORKSHOP LEADER: DANIELLE LEGROS GEORGES
Danielle Legros Georges is a poet, educator, and translator. She is a professor of creative of writing, and the director of Lesley University’s MFA Program in Creative Writing. Appointed Boston’s second Poet Laureate in 2015, her work has included collaborations with literary and visual artists, museums and galleries. Her honors include fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Boston Foundation, the Black Metropolis Research Consortium, and commissions from the Trustees of Reservations and the Boston Public Library. She is the author of two books of poems, The Dear Remote Nearness of You and Maroon; the chapbook Letters from Congo; and is the editor of City of Notions: An Anthology of Contemporary Boston Poems.
